Wedding Cakes with Teatime Catering in Northern Virginia
Teatime Delicacies, Inc. entered 2014 celebrating THIRTY ONE YEARS in business!! THAT is a lot of catering, a lot of parties, a lot of FOOD and a lot of wedding cakes! While in recent years we have been able to create photo galleries on my Ipad for clients to browse, in the “Old Days” it was old fashioned photographs taken with a regular camera that allowed potential brides and grooms to look at Ruth’s work.
The above photo captures the VERY FIRST wedding cake that I created. I had just started selling desserts to local restaurants when one of the managers asked if I made wedding cakes. Um, sure, if you give me a picture I’m sure I can figure it out. I called around local bakeries and asked what they charged, and voila – hey, I think I can make a living doing this! First cake baptism by fire – 4 tier cake with basket weave design nearly 30 years ago. Not to shabby for first time out the gate!
Several years later (or 25 years ago) Mike and I got married and I wasn’t going to even have a wedding cake. When I reconsidered, I said, “well, it’s not going to look like a traditional cake…” and it didn’t…
It was a three tier Bourbon Street Fudge Cake with Bavarian Cream Filling, Chocolate Ganache and Fresh Raspberries. The “Groom’s” Cake was actually a heart shaped Italian Coconut Cream Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and Fresh Coconut. That was some seriously delicious cake.
Yes, different look, I know.
There were some crazy cakes in those early days, some I am really proud of but do not care if I ever have to recreate them again.
This is probably one of the craziest ever wedding cakes. It is an Art Deco design, and I had a photo about the size of a postage stamp to go by. It took me a solid two days to decorate, and it was displayed at the fabulous Kennedy Warren Ballroom in Washington DC. In broad daylight it was terrifying, but once it was in the ballroom, it really was spectacular.
Here’s another, thank you Martha Stewart, pre Pinterest days, this was all the rage for a while. The Tiffany Gift Box Wedding Cake. All Sugar Ribbons. Days and days and days…..
It wasn’t always wedding cakes that our catering company created for wedding receptions. There were other oddly inventive designs. How about this for a 40th birthday party with bad attitude?
Yes, that is exactly what you thought it was. A coffin cake filled with Fresh Raspberries. Carpe Diem!
There was even a time during the 80’s where real estate was so electric that we created actual cake “houses” of the model homes the agents were showing!
Solid cake, no joke.
And one of our most famous because it was actually on the local news, a senator from Colorado celebrated her birthday with a replica of the US Capitol.
When it was served, they asked if you wanted a piece from the House or the Senate!
I even think that was Carrot Cake!
Teatime Delicacies, Inc. has made hundreds of wedding cakes, birthday cakes, anniversary cakes over the years as well as hundreds of delicious desserts to accompany our events. This was a fun walk down memory lane.
