Mother’s Day Menus from Catering By Teatime

My First Food Memory

I have been told the very first thing I ever cooked/baked were (above) Russian Teacakes, also referred to as Mexican Wedding Cakes (who knew I would grow up to be a caterer of weddings, and LOVE vacationing in Mexico?!).  I might have been 5, and in theory my mother must have showed me how to make them.  That is probably the last thing Mom showed me in the kitchen as from that day forward I cooked all the time.  I have gone all to cater all around the Washington DC metropolitan area, and while I have little food memories with my own mother, the memories with my son are a whole different story.
When you reflect on Mother’s Day, what do you remember?  Will it be food memories?  Being sick and having Mom make you chicken soup or some other comfort food?  (See last week’s blog post regarding Comfort Food!)  I do remember Mom making me Milk Toast when I didn’t feel well, and that actually tastes better than it sounds…

A lot of years ago…

When my son was very small, he would head into the kitchen in his footed pajamas, drag a chair over to the counter to explore what Mom the Caterer was preparing and he was on board to help.  “Focaccia?!”  And yes, he could pronounce that.  As a 3 year old in pre school, his teacher described to me his solitary play earlier in the day.  When asked what he was making, his reply, “Couscous”.

Flash forward 20 years, and families gather for any number of reasons to celebrate.  Food is the universal playground that makes us equal.  All families, not matter what part of the globe, love to gather and eat/drink/laugh.  Even in sorrow we gather to eat.  I am so grateful to have a profession that offers immediate gratification.  “That was great!  That was delicious!  OMG!!”

A phone call earlier this week was the perfect example.  My son no longer lives in Northern Virginia, he has left many months ago to start another chapter of his life.  This mother misses him every day.  I am trying to find a way to let him go, but keep him connected.  “Mom, I have a challenge…” Oh dear, what might this be about?  “How do you cook a rump roast?”
Score.

Simple Gifts
Simple Spring Gifts

Sometimes it just helps to keep is simple. I am always on the lookout for tiny gifts.  Live in the present, keep your eyes and ears wide open for small blessings.  As a mother for Mother’s Day, being part of food memories is a perfect gift.
