Catering Cabell’s Mill, Centreville VA
Fabulous Fresh Fruit Arrangement |
It’s a 50th birthday celebration this past weekend at Cabell’s Mill in Centreville VA. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/hprs/cabells.htm
Located in the wooded acres of Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, Cabell’s Mill
has long been a unique setting for social occasions. Built prior to
1800 and operated as a mill until 1916, the property was purchased in
1935 by Ellanor Lawrence. She and her husband, David, founder of US
News & World Report, transformed the old mill into a guest house
and hosted many Washington notables, including Franklin and Eleanor
Roosevelt.
Today, Cabell’s Mill offers a spacious room with hardwood floors, deep
window sills and a working fireplace. On the lower level is a smaller
room with an antique buffet table and fireplace, while outside an
expansive terrace overlooks Big Rocky Run. The mill provides a
beautiful secluded setting for many special occasions.
Catering By Teatime has provided catering service to many wedding receptions at this charming venue, but it is equally a space that lends itself to private parties, as in a lovely gathering of friends and family to celebrate a 50th birthday on a winter afternoon.
Upstairs Cabell’s Mill |
A fire lit in the stone fireplace provided a warm glow for this celebration. Champagne, coffee and a citrus fruit punch greeted guests upon their arrival while Ruth worked her magic with our Heavy Appetizer Menu in the kitchen space downstairs.
Catering at Cabell’s Mill |
This is where I tell you how important it is when hiring a caterer, use someone who is familiar with the venue. Cabell’s Mill is part of Fairfax County’s Historic Rental Properties. This particular venue has a very limited kitchen space as shown in above photo. It’s a very efficient use of space, just limited. As a caterer who has worked this venue multiple times over many years, I am familiar with what does or does not work. Catering By Teatime brought in the small convection oven, the butane burner, the electric griddle. Without those devices there would be no way to warm any of the hot appetizers.

On the griddle we prepared Zucchini Pancakes with Melted Brie along with Spanekopita. On the butane burner we warmed Artichoke Dip with Parmesan Cheese. In the convection oven we reheated Miniature Chicken And Waffles.
Antipasto Display |
Teatime also served an Antipasto Display with Cured Meats, Grilled Vegetables, Roasted Red Bell Peppers, Hard Boiled Egg, Marinated Fresh Mozzarella, Assorted Olives, Artichoke Hearts, and Hearts of Palm. This is a perfect menu for a wedding reception or any gathering where there might be limited table seating as it is basically utensil free.
Roast Pepper Beef with Chipotle Cabernet Cream |
Other menu items included Marinated Roast Pepper Beef with Chipotle Cabernet Cream on Toasts as well as the fruit arrangement at top of this post with Fresh Pineapple, Cantaloupe, Honey Dew Melon, Watermelon, Blood Oranges, Blackberries, and the spectacular Pomegranate. Thanks to Anita and Gio working their own magic!
Desserts included Key Lime Pie bites, New York Cheesecake with Raspberry Sauce, and Chocolate Fudge Truffles, otherwise known as Death Balls.
